Benefactor or Slave Trader

"The afternoon when I met Mr. Tanaka Ichiro," says Sayuri (Chiyo), "really was the best and the worst of my life" [p. 7]. Is Mr. Tanaka purely motivated by the money he will make from selling Chiyo to Mrs. Nitta, or is he also thinking of Chiyo's future? Is he, as he implies in his letter, her friend? How do you think Chiyo feels about the role Mr. Tanaka played in the direction of her life?

I believe that Mr Tanaka is truely thinking about Chiyo's future because he took the time to write her that letter to inform her of her parent's deaths. I don't think he would have written her that letter about her parents and of her sister passing through Yoroido if he was purely motivated by the money that he made from selling Chiyo to Mrs Nitta. He wanted Chiyo to have a better future than what was destined for her in Yoroido.

Mr. Tanaka is probably sincere in his acctions. Given the fact that he had a childhood similar to hers(except he was a boy) he probably wants to give the chance he had back to someone else. And, as the above poster said he most likley wouldn't have taken time out of his day to write on that paticular topic.

I think that Mr.Tanaka does want something better for Chiyo's future because he took time to write her that letter telling them about the death of their parents. I dont think that his motivation was the money,I think that maybe he saw something good in Chiyo and that was what motivated him into selling her to Mrs.Nitta. I believe that he thinks that she has a chance in being a Geisha because of her eyes...

I believe Mr. Tanaka is sincere in his actions. His intention is not to collect the money but to give Chiro a better more fulfilling future.I think he honestly thinks he is doing the right thing even though both girls are having a hard time adapting. He sees beauty in Chiro and believes she should not be condemned to life in a fishing village but rather in a geisha house.

I believe Mr. Tanaka is partially in it for the money, as that is his business, but he also cares for Chiyo. He realizes that she has little hope of a good life staying with her old father and helpless, stupid sister. Chiyo is probably thankful for the escape Mr. Tanaka provided out of her town which would most likely get her no where in life. She is unhappy being separated from Satsu, though.

I'd say Mr. Tanaka is considering the money AND Chiyo's future. He knows Chiyo is special, so she'll get him quite a bit of money. However, because she's special, he probably is taking extra interest in her. I think he wants her to feel accepted so she'll like her life as a Geisha. He may even want to be involved in her life once she retires.

Chiyo probably has mixed feelings towards him. He did send her to a place where she would learn to read and write, and where she would be taken care of for the most part, but she also has to endure her chores and training. I think once she grows up, she'll look back and be glad that Mr. Tanaka took her away from the fishing village. She wouldn't have had a good future there at all.

I agee with Jason Carter. Mr. Tanaka had a similar childhood to Chiyo's but he also knows what she is capable of. He knows that being poor doesn't have to hold you back. I think that most of the time Mr. Tanaka would be purely motivated by money but I think that this is a special case and that he actually cares about the girls.

I think that Mr. Tanaka was looking out for Chiyo's best interests because he could have left her in Yoroido with little of a future. Instead he tried to give her a a very noble future that would let her live comfortably without any worries of money. I think Chiyo has mixed feelings about Mr. Tanaka because she says it was both the worst and best day of her life. I think when everything happened when she was young and didn't understand exactly what was happening. I think that later in her life she will realize that Mr. Tanaka wasn't selling her to be cruel.

I think that Mr. Tanaka is thinking both about making some money and for Chiyo's future because in reality he is helping the both of them. He brought Chiyo away from potentially getting into a situation where she had to live for herself and make all her own money and living, yet he also could make some money in the process so he creates a good deal for himself too.

In the chinese culture, a Geisha doesn't seem to be a bad thing. Also in the condition that her parents were in he knew they would need somewhere to go and make a living. He wrote her informing her of their deaths. This was a sign of caring on his part. He truely cares about them enough to set them up with a good, steady job in the chinese culture.

I believe Mr. Tanaka had both his and Chiyo's interests in mind. Obviously he wanted money (who doesn't) but at the same time I believe he sees the beauty in Chiyo and knows that she could one day become a beautiful and successful Geisha. I think he has a spot in his heart for her and that he'll play a big role in her future.

I think that honestly Mr. Tanaka was thinking about Chiyo's future when he sold her to Mrs. Nitta. As he says earlier in the book he lost both his parents when he was younger and he was lucky enough to stumble apon a good future. I think that he just wants the best for Chiyo and sending her to Kyoto would give her an opprotunity to make something out of her life.
At first Chiyo is confused about why he would sent her to a place like this, she thought that it was just for the money but over time she realizes why he did what he did and that it was for her own good.

Ian G. said...

I believe that Mr. Tanaka is motivated by money (he's a Japanese businessman), but that he still has a sense of moral being as well. Chiyo reminds him of himself when he was younger (excluding the gender difference), and he wants to provide her with an opportunity that will (eventually) result in fame for her as being a prized Geisha. He thinks that being sent to the city, as opposed to some isolated little village, will present her with opportunities that wouldn't otherwise be available. There is also evidence that he cared about Chiyo a bit more than merely a cash crop later in the book when he authors the personal letter to her. When all is said and done, Mr. Tanaka is undoubtedly a good-hearted, yet money-driven man. Or at least, that's my literary opinion.

kevin said...

I believe that Mr. Tanaka is thinking about Chiyo's future and not only the money he has made off her. Although this is a way that he may very well make money, I believe that he cared for Chiyo's future, and knowing that the journey for her may have been hard, he knew that it was the best thing for her. I believe that Chiyo at first saw this act as cruel and mean by Mr. Tanaka, but later she will see that Mr. Tanaka could have done absolutely nothing better for her future. So even though Mr. Tanaka made some profit off of this act, I believe that he cared more for Chiyo's future then anything else.

I don’t think Mr. Tanaka was motivated by the money he would make from selling Chiyo, he was thinking about her future. I don’t think he is her friend, but he still wanted to help her to have a better life. He had lived like Chiyo when he was a boy, and he wanted to do something for her. He thought that Chiyo could succeed and maybe that is way he sold her. He even informed her about her parents and sister.

Brad Kleespies said...

I believe MR. Tanaka was thinking of both the money he would earn from Chiyo and her future. IF MR Tanaka did not care about Chiyo and she was just another pay-day he would not have sent her a letter telling her of the death of both her parents.

I think that Chiyo will ultimately be happy for the role MR. Tanaka played in her life because with out him she would never have become a geisha and she would never have meet pumpkin or the man form the bridge. Its safe to say that without MR Tanaka Chiyo's life would have been quite boring.

Ryan Gfroerer said...

When Mr. Tanaka looked at Chiyo he saw himself as a child. He figured he could make money off of Chiyo as well as make a foundation for her future. Although the steps to become a Geisha are a bit tedious, her outcome could be worth it.

James Amidon said...

I feel that Mr. Tanaka’s decision to sell Chiyo to a geisha house in Kyoto was mutually beneficial for both Chiyo and himself; Chiyo’s older sister however got the short end of the stick. Mr. Tanaka did deprive Chiyo of choice, however he also is provided with a home to live in, food on the table and a consistent set of living mates. The money that Mr. Tanaka receives probably in addition to “tipsy house” and its surrounding property upon the of death of Chiyo’s parents. Chiyo does not seem to have the near immediate benefit however in the long run she can turn this into lifelong financial stability. Mr. Tanaka was thinking for Chiyo and her future, she might not be happy with him now, but in the end she will be greatly thankful to him, for he gave her a chance she would otherwise never have known.

Puckett said...

I think Mr. Tanaka is both selfish with the money, but as well as in it for the money. Mr. Tanaka and Chiyo share similar lifes as children, and he also shows his care by sending the letter about her parents...at the same time, I'm sure he was in it for the money because he is in fact a business man. He obviously didn't care much about Chiyo's sister, he sent her to a whore house. So I think he is both careing for Chiyo, but also a ruthless slave trader.

I think that Mr. Tanaka has really has just tried to help Chiyo better herself in the future. In Kyoto, geisha are successful and make lots of money than most people.

I think that Mr.Tanaka is thinking about Chiyo's future while at the same time, thought about the money he would make off of her the first time he met her. But who wouldn't think about that? It shows that Mr.Tanaka really is Chiyos friends because he took the time to write the letter to her about her parents. Any other person who wasn't considerate and was just in it for the money wouldn't have done what he did. That to me shoes he does care about Chiyo and her future. I think that at first, Chito was upset with Mr.Tanaka for selling her to Mrs.Nitta because the first year training to be a geisha was really hard for her. But after the day she met the chairman in the street, she was more determined to become a geisha, and saw that it had a future for her. She has Mr.Tanaka to thank for that. I think in the end, Chiyo will not be mad at Mr.Tanaka for taking her away from her family

Chiyo most likely at first thought he didn't care about her and that is why he sold her, but im sure later in her life she is going to be thankful.

I believe that Mr. Tanaka truly has Chiyo's future in his best interest. I can tell this because of his actions in the past chapters. He took time out of his busy life and wrote her a very thoughtful and personal letter. He did not have to do this but the fact that he did makes it very clear that his intentions are pure. I do not see Mr. Tanaka as being a greedy or selfish man. Of course he would not be doing this for free, but he is not in it just for the money!

I think that Mr. Tanaka could see great potential in Chiyo becoming a geisha. She was not only beautiful, but also very clever. She had what it took to become the best, and if he didn't give her this opportunity it probably would have never came. He knew that if she had the chance she would succeed, which would by far give her a better future than staying in her fishing village. I think that Chiyo is confused if Mr. Tanaka is really her friend or not. She could see that he was looking out for her future, but at the same time he had taken her from her family and home. I personally believe that he is her friend because he took the time to write to her about her parents and sent her the tablets.

I believe that My. Tanaka is looking out for Chiyo's future for two different reasons. For one, he could have just left her in Yoroido, with no future, and second, he didn't need the money that he recieved from selling her because he was already very wealthy. I think that Chiyo has mixed feelings about Mr. Tanaka, because she said that it was the best and the worst day of her life. I think that she feels that it was the worst day of her life because she lost her entire family, but I think that she believes that it was the best day because it provided her with a future.

I think that he sold her to Mrs. Nitta because although it may not make Chiyo so happy at first, he thinks it will give her more of an opportunity than if she was going to be with Yoroido.Chiyo is unhappy from being seperated from her sister although I think at this point she is so happy to have gotten out of her town that would have never got her anywhere in life. She needed to get away from all the stress from her mother getting ready to pass away.

Although Mr. Tanaka did benefit from selling Chiyo, I think it was for the best. Both of her parents were in bad shape and her older sister would not be able to support both of them. Although her new life as a Geisha has had its hardships; her one as a poor fisher wife would have been harder. Being a Geisha is a promising career and one that would suit chiyo quite well. It would educate her and make her more civilized. I think Chiyo was pushed into the better path for her future, even though she was pushed hard. It is her sister that I feel bad for. It is her sister that got the short end of the stick out of all three of them.

I believe that Mr. Tanaka had multiple movtives. He not only profited by recieving money for the girls but I believe that he profited by seeing that Chiyo had a future ahead of her. He might have been purely motivated by money to begin with but as he grew to know Chiyo I think that he grew very fond of her. Mr. Tanaka is not Chiyo's friend but I believe that he finds himself her mentor. When first going to the sumo wrestling meet Chiyo thought that the person that she and Mameha were going to entertain was Mr. Tanaka and when she thought that she had such feelings of hatred because she was angry at the fact that he had seperated her and her sister. I believe that if they had lived together in the Okiya then Chiyo would not have been as angry at him for selling her.

I think that Mr.Tanaka believes that he is helping Chiyo. He thinks that Chiyo will have a chance to be someone if she becomes a Geisha. For one reason, Mr.Tanaka already had enough money, so I don’t think that was his only motive in ‘selling’ Chiyo and her sister. In the letter that he writes to Chiyo, Mr. Tanaka says “It is rare for ordinary birds to give birth to a swan. The swan who goes on living in its parent’s tree will die; this is why those who are beautiful and talented bear the burden of finding their own way in the world (p. 119).” Mr. Tanaka thinks that Chiyo is better off in her new life. But he does not know whether or not she would have been happy if she stayed in Yoroido. He makes a decision for Chiyo, but it was not one that was not his to make. Chiyo states that she is happy to have been given the opportunity to become a Geisha. But she says that it was a life “mixed with both happiness and sadness”.

The book doesn't really give you a chance to get to understand Mr. Tanaka's intentions. I, however, believe he was true to his word about wanting to make life better for Chiyo. I believe Mr. Tanaka saw the current ordeal as a win win situation. He saw nothing for Chiyo in Yoroido in the near future, and he probably wanted to make a few dollars. I believe things also could have been a lot worse for Chiyo. Chiyo could have found herself in a brothel like her sister did. I do believe that Mr. Tanaka was Chiyo's friend only because he wanted to send her to a place as reputable as an okiya. If he would have sent her to the brothel then no i would not believe he was in it for her well-being. I think Chiyo viewed his interference in her life first at being horrible because he had sold her into slavery. Soon after her hatred for him, she learned that maybe what she got was what she wanted all along, without ever knowing it. She now (from where I'm at in the book) views herself as being a symbol of beauty and class. She sees herself as being something great. She could probably never have achieved this in Yoroido.

From what I remember Tanaka took time to write the letter about the parents and it shows that he cares because he took his but I don’t think that’s the only reason he also might be doing it for the money.

I don't think Mr. Tanaka is in it for the money. I mean ya sure he might be getting a few bucks for her, but I don't think it really matters to him. He is mainly thinking about her future. I really don't think that if he was in it for the money he would not have wrote that letter for her.

When mr tanaka wrote the letter to chiyo, he wrote it from his heart because he was deeply concerned about her future. I also believe that he was concerned about the money as well because if he wasnt he would not sell but give away.

Mr Tanaka was watching out for for Chiyo and wanting her to have a good future, that letter was definatly from his heart and soul. There was no evidence that he wrote to any others so he wouldnt be in it for the money. He is doing it for her.

I believe that Mr. Tanaka was thinking about Chiyo's future and towards the money. Mr. Tanaka is an Asia business man, but then again he did spend time writing that letter for Chiyo.I do believe that Mr. Tanaka is considered her friend, and when she retires he will still be there for her. Then again he might still be thinking how much he could sell Chiyo for.I believe that Chiyo didn't like the whole geisha role until she met the chairman because she started to like him.

I think that Mr. Tanaka wasn’t thinking of himself. He was thinking of Sauri’s future, because it seemed like he really didn’t care about the money. Also, he took the time to write that letter telling her about her parent’s death. If he really didn’t care he would have just taken the money and ran. Really he did give her the chance to build a great life for herself.

I Believe Mr. Tanaka really did want to help Chiyo and Chiyo's future, He really did want a better future for her because he him self knew how it felt for families to fall apart and to be very thankful to be taken in. He took his own time to get her out of there and put her in a better place, yes the money probably helped him and he probably wanted it but I think Chiyo came first he did care if he didn’t he wouldn’t of cared for her mother by giving her good tea and he wouldn’t of wrote her the letter about her parents so that she would for once know what was going on and what has happened, and he knew with her beauty she could get far but he had to help her and lead her there first. I think Chiyo felt betrayed by Mr. Tanaka at first because she wished she would have been with her sister but then yet knew she would have a better future there, so she was thankful also.

I RE-CORRECTED MY BLOGG>>>>>>>>>

I think personally he is thinking of her future. Because I don’t think that money is a big deal to him. Because since he took the time to write that letter telling her of her parents and sister passing through Yoroido. If he was thinking of the money I don’t think that he would have took the time to write the letter telling her anything. He wanted her to have a good life and not really have to worry about a lot of things. I think he wants her to have a good future and be able to live her life well.

Mr. Tanaka is truely thinking about Chiyo's future. He wouldn't of put effort towards helping her if he really didn't want to. He spent time on the letter which meant he was actually concerned. Money is not a matter he wanted her to have a good future and live a good life. Who knows what would of happen to her if he didn't help

i think that Mr. Tanaka did a good thing because he was thinking about their future and not the money. One reason why i think this way is because when chiyo's parents died he sent them a letter telling them that there parents had past away so i think that Mr. Tanaka only cared about chiyo and that is why he sold them.

Mr. Tanaka is not motivated by the money he will make from selling Chiyo to Mrs. Nitta. I beleive that he has her future in mind, and is being her friend by doing whats best for her. i also think that Chiyo feels that Mr, Tanaka is the only reason she became a geisha, and is greatful for his gesture.

MR.Tanaka knows how Chiyo is and he knows that she has a bright future, he even took the time to write the letter.. that says enofe.
And if has to do with money he wouldent care for her but he did and money at that time wasent importint to him. He just wants for her to not worry about alot of thing he just wants what he thinks is right...

Mr.Tanaka is thinking of Chiyo's future but wants to profit from it too. So he sold her to the okiya for money and maybe thought Chiyo might have a better life as a geisha than a fisherman's wife. So Mr.Tanaka is her friend or he wouldnt have used his time to help Chiyo. Chiyo must feel that Mr.Tanaka is her friend or else he wouldnt have take the time to write the letter.

I think that Mr. Tanaka's intentions were meant to be for the better. I think money wasnt apart of his motive for Chiyo's future. He also takes time out of his own life to do things for Sayuri.

I believe that Mr. Tanaka is not only interested in Chiyo's future, but also interested in the fact that he too could benefit from her beauty. I do believe that he is postive about how Chiyo's future will turn out, because he spent all the time of writing her a letter about her parents death, so he does want her to know what is going on with her life.

I think that Chiyo will be overall very happy with Mr. Tanaka when her training and everything is all over with. If she stayed at home, she would have been poor her whole life, but as a geisha she would become something, and pursue a life that she wants.

peden said...

I believe that Mr. Tanaka is thinking both about making some money and for Chiyo's future so they are both benefitting from it. He brought Chiyo away from potentially getting into a situation where she had fend for herself and make all her own money and living, yet he also could make some money in the process so he creates an ideal situtation for himself.

I think Mr. Tanaka is thinking about Chiyo's future because he writes a letter telling about her parents deaths. If money motivated him he wouldn't have tried as hard as he did. He risks everything for her and gave up so much for her. He truely does care for her. And seeing the movie you can def. tell that he would do anything for her. He wants her to have a good life with out any stress and worrying about the deaths of her parents.

Mr. Tanaka i question him. Even if he did think in the back of his mind that Chiyo would be a famous geisha he stil knew he would one day make a ton of money off of her. Which makes him in my book less of a man. There's also the posibility that he will one day see himself with chiyo so he then plans for her future ahead of time. Knowing she does not have a family to rely on because they have passed on. Just maybe he did it out of the kindness of his heart. For the sake of a young geisha to be, knowing the life she will take on (the drama, and slavery)

I am confident that Mr. Tanaka was indeed thnking of Chiyo when he sold her to the okyia. He knew that if Chiyo became an orphan child (which could have happened), she would be doomed to the life of a servant girl. This way, Mr. Tanaka gave her a chance that Chiyo was too little to understand fully. As of right now in the story, Chiyo felt that Mr. Tanaka betrayed her, but later she would be grateful for the chance.

My thoughts on that...

Mr. Tanaka, he's a businessman. It's his job to make money, and to do his job good, he needs to be able to befriend people...Gain their trust...If he cant do that, He doesnt make money.. Enough said on that.

I beleive chiyo thinks differently than me, that Mr. Tanaka really does care about her future, and she is getting a chance to succeed in life..To an extent. He set her up to succeed, she almost failed, but pulled through i think.

Most buisnees men have a fairly keen sense on what is going on with the economy. So...that realy doues leave the question as to weather or not Mr Tanaka was trying to make money or save Chiyo. Personaly I would say both. Because he new that the economy was fluctuating and he was going to need all the money he could get. And he found this beautiful little girl with amazingly unique eyes and thought, "What the heck" and decided he would convince Chiyo's dad to sell Chiyo and her sister. So, he saved Chiyo from having to suffer with no dinner for a few months, and put a little money in his pocket at the same time.

Mr. Tanaka is possibly truthful in his trials. Given the fact that he had an early life been similar to hers (except he was a boy) he perhaps wants to give the possibility he had back to somebody else. As all of the above announcements said he most likely wouldn't have taken the moment out of his day to note down on that particular subject.

What do you mean by:" And seeing the movie you can def. tell that he would do anything for her." Do we see this in the movie? by this i mean that you can see it in his eyes, like when he looks at her, the way he treats her and how hard he trys to be with her.

Mr. Tanaka is in it for Chiyo's future because he wouldn't have taken the time out of his day to get her out of Yoroido and then wrote her telling her about the death of her parents. If he was only in it for the money then he would have dropped her off at Mrs. Nitta's house and not have wrote Chiyo a letter telling her about her parents.

In my oppinion Mr. Tanaka is thinking about the money he will make from selling Chiyo but also in the back of his mind he is thinking that her father is not goin to be able to take care of the girls. But mostly he is thinking of the money he can make off of her and I think that is what thier father thinks also. I think he is her friend but he doesnt really care about her well being.
I think that Chiyo is really in disbelief of what Mr.Tanaka did and doesnt really feel the same for him as she did at one time.

Recorrected.

When Mr. Tanaka looked at Chiyo he saw himself as a child. He figured he could make money off of Chiyo as well as make a foundation for her future. I believe he was leaning more towards her future given he probably wouldn't make a very substantial amount of money off of her. Although the steps to become a Geisha are a bit tedious, her outcome could be worth it. Another possibility is that Tanaka was saving her from becoming an orphan. Given the status of both her parents, one could easily tell their time was about to come. Chiyo would have been left with only her sister to care for her. I don't think Tanaka was souly thinking about Chiyo but her sister as well. Both of them were taken to the okiya but her sister was rejected upon arrival which was unfortunate.

If Mr. Tanaka wasnt her friend, i believe that he wouldnt have sent her the letter to inform her of her parents. But I also think that he is motivated by money otherwise he would have tried to reunite her with her parents.

I think his actions were for both money, and Chiyo's well being. He obviously wanted the money or he would have just sent her to the okiya. I'm sure he knew it would be better for her. She would have had a much more horrible life in the fishing village. For the most part, everything ended up good.

Brandon_Hamilton said...

I think that Mr Tanaka wants chiyo to succeed in the future. Because she wont have much of a life being a fishermans daughter. Tanaka is doing what he feels best for her. Even though she may not understand at the beggining whats going to take place for her.
